17 November is International Students’ Day. A nod to all the students in Amsterdam, and to their own choices.
“My mother absolutely cannot see this.”
Amsterdam and students.
That's a combination we have quite a bit of experience with by now.
Students come here from all over the world.
New city.
New degree.
New room.
New people.
And apparently sometimes also:
a new nose.
We regularly hear something along the lines of:
“I wanted this back home for years.”
“So why didn't you?”
Short silence.
“My mother.”
Okay.
Clear.
For many students, moving to Amsterdam is one of the first moments when they get to decide completely for themselves how to shape their lives.
And of course a piercing is just a piercing.
We're not going to make it bigger than it is.
But sometimes a small thing marks something bigger.
The first time you choose for yourself.
Without permission.
Without someone telling you it doesn't suit you.
Without having to explain why.
And yes…
a few months later, mum sometimes comes to visit.
Then phase two begins:
“Could you make it invisible, just for a moment?”
