The materials in detail
Specification: Titanium Ti6AL-4V-ELI, ASTM F136
Titanium is the ideal material for initial and healed piercings thanks to its hypoallergenic properties and compliance with the EU Nickel Directive.
Benefits: Lightweight (half the weight of steel), twice as strong, and suitable for sterilisation processes.
Use: Available in polished or anodised colours and perfect for initial piercings.
Specification: ASTM F138 and ISO 5832-1
Surgical steel is a widely used material for body jewellery.
Benefits: Durable, flexible, and more shiny than titanium.
Use: Suitable for healed piercings; due to its higher weight it is less ideal for initial piercings.
Black Steel is made by applying a PVD coating (Physical Vapor Deposition) over SS316L steel.
Benefits: Creates a hard, biocompatible layer.
Use: Suitable for healed piercings.
Note: Cheaper variants may discolour faster. Choose black titanium as an alternative.
A less common choice because of its slight brightness, but with clear advantages.
Benefits: Hypoallergenic and durable.
Use: Mostly used for tunnels and nose piercings.
Gold-plated piercing jewellery with a PVD layer of 24K gold.
Benefits: Luxurious appearance and biocompatible.
Use: Only suitable for healed piercings, not for stretching ears.
Rose gold piercings with a PVD coating of a 14–22K rose gold alloy.
Benefits: Elegant look and easy to combine with other jewellery.
Use: Perfect for healed piercings.
Bioplast® is a flexible and hypoallergenic plastic material ideal for initial piercings.
Benefits: Adapts to body temperature, reduces swelling, and speeds up healing.
Use: Available in various colours and suitable for autoclave sterilisation.
Niobium is a pure, nickel-free metal that can be anodised in various colours.
Benefits: Hypoallergenic, comfortable, and visually attractive.
Use: Suitable for both initial and healed piercings.
Natural materials such as horn, bone, and wood.
Benefits: Aesthetically unique and traditional.
Use: Not suitable for initial piercings or use in moist conditions.
Silver is mainly used for navel piercings and earrings.
Benefits: Rhodium-plated for extra shine and protection.
Use: Only suitable for healed piercings.
Acrylic jewellery is colourful and affordable.
Benefits: Available in hundreds of designs.
Use: Not suitable for initial piercings; cannot be sterilised in an autoclave.
Enamel offers creative freedom and durability.
Benefits: Scratch-resistant, durable, and chemically resistant.
Use: Applied as a coating on metal jewellery for a unique look.
A strong, nickel-free metal with a luxurious appearance.
Benefits: Hypoallergenic, corrosion-resistant, and visually attractive.
Use: Suitable for initial and healed piercings.
14K gold contains 58.3% pure gold; 18K gold contains 75% pure gold.
Benefits: 14K is ideal for daily wear; 18K is more luxurious and hypoallergenic, but softer and more prone to scratches.
Use: Suitable for healed piercings.
