Everything about sizes
What should you know before ordering jewelry? The two most important numbers are the bar thickness and the length. Here you will learn exactly how to read them and which size fits your piercing.
1. Bar thickness determines the thread
The most common bar thicknesses are 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm. That thickness is also the thread size of your accessories. So a 1.2 mm ball only fits a 1.2 mm bar. A 1.6 mm ball does not fit a 1.2 mm bar and vice versa.
| Bar thickness | Commonly used for |
|---|---|
| 1.0 mm | Nostril, small ear piercings |
| 1.2 mm | Helix, tragus, labret, eyebrow |
| 1.6 mm | Tongue, navel, nipple, industrials |
Not sure which thickness you are wearing? Contact the Piercings Works shop in Amsterdam or at the Beverwijk Bazaar. We are happy to measure it for you.
2. Length is measured between the accessories
The length of a piercing jewelry piece is measured between the accessories screwed onto the bar. The thread itself is not included. For a curved bar (banana), measure in a straight line between the accessories. This matches the distance between the two holes of your actual piercing — not the jewelry, but the piercing in your body.
3. What the sizes on the website mean
Every piece of jewelry lists dimensions. If you are not familiar with them yet, they can be hard to decipher. As you now know, all jewelry has a thickness and therefore a certain thread type. When choosing accessories, make sure they match each other.
4. Common sizes per piercing

Frequently asked questions about sizes
How do I measure the length of my piercing jewelry?
Length is measured between the two accessories screwed onto the bar. The thread itself is not included. For a curved bar (banana), measure in a straight line between the accessories. This equals the distance between the two holes of your piercing in your body.
What does '1.6 x 10 mm' mean on the website?
The first number (1.6 mm) is the bar thickness and thread size. The second number (10 mm) is the length of the bar between the threaded parts. With '1.2 x 12 x 3 mm', 1.2 mm is the thickness, 12 mm is the length and 3 mm is the diameter of the balls or spikes.
Can I put a 1.2 mm ball on a 1.6 mm bar?
No. The thread of a 1.2 mm accessory is narrower than that of a 1.6 mm bar. They do not fit each other. Choose accessories with exactly the same bar thickness as your jewelry.
My piercing is swollen. Do I need a longer bar?
Often yes. For a new piercing we use a slightly longer bar to allow room for swelling. After healing you can usually switch to a shorter, snugger piece. Not sure? Contact our Amsterdam studio or the Beverwijk Bazaar location.
What is the difference between a barbell, labret and banana?
A barbell has a screw ball on both sides. A labret has a flat disc on the back and an accessory on the front. A banana is a curved bar, often used for navel piercings.
How do I know if my earlobe is ready for larger jewelry?
Earlobes can be stretched to larger sizes. Always increase gradually and wait until the skin is fully healthy before taking the next size. When stretching, only use suitable materials such as titanium or glass.
