A helix here. A conch there. Maybe an extra lobe. On their own, those piercings can look great. A curated ear takes it a step further: several piercings are designed on purpose as one whole. Placement, jewellery, shapes, stone sizes, metal colour and even the empty space in between all work together. The result? Not a random collection of piercings, but an ear with rhythm, balance and character.

Piercings Works has been working with ear piercings, ear anatomy, jewellery and long-term ear projects since 1998. Here's what we've learned about building an ear stack that really works.

What is a curated ear?

A curated ear is an ear where multiple piercings don't just happen to sit next to each other, but form one composition together. Think of combinations of:

  • lobe and stacked lobe;
  • helix, forward helix and hidden helix;
  • flat;
  • conch;
  • tragus;
  • rook, daith and industrial.

The big difference with separate piercings comes down to three things: order, flow and hierarchy. Which piercing goes in first? Which jewellery follows the line of your ear? Where's the focal point? And where do you deliberately leave space? That's ear curation.

Anatomy always comes first

Our golden rule: you design a curated ear for the ear you actually have, not for a photo of someone else's. Instagram and Pinterest are amazing for inspiration, but your ear has its own shape. Not every ear suits every piercing. Piercings like the rook, daith, snug and industrial depend heavily on your anatomy.

That's why we always look at these first:

  • the shape and thickness of your cartilage;
  • the space available;
  • the natural lines of your ear;
  • how you sleep and your lifestyle;
  • which placements are technically sound.

Only then does the design start.

How many piercings can you get at once?

A beautiful curated ear doesn't have to be finished in one afternoon. In fact, we usually advise against it. We recommend a maximum of two to three cartilage piercings per session, and no more than one slow-healing placement at a time.

Why? Every new piercing is also a new wound that needs to heal. More piercings at once means:

  • more swelling;
  • more strain on your ear;
  • more trouble sleeping;
  • a bigger chance of irritation;
  • less overview while everything heals.

So a curated ear is often a project in phases. And that's a good thing: it gives you room to make the design better step by step. Read more in Would you like to get several ear piercings at the same time?

Which piercings go in first?

For a big ear project, we usually start with the placements that are anatomically the most critical or take the longest to heal, such as the conch, daith, rook and industrial. After that, piercings like the helix, forward helix and flat can be added. Lobes and decorative accents often come last, because they're easier to fit into the design.

This way you avoid an early piercing ending up exactly where you actually wanted an important focal point.

How do you make a curated ear look amazing?

A great design isn't about the number of piercings. It's about balance. We work with five design principles:

  1. One focal point. Choose one piece of jewellery that draws the eye.
  2. Odd rhythm. Groups of three or five often look more natural than four or six.
  3. Empty space is part of the design. Not every bit of your ear needs filling.
  4. Follow the line of your ear. Jewellery should move with the natural shape.
  5. Stick to one base colour. For example yellow gold as the main colour and white gold only as an accent. That calm look often makes a curated ear feel more luxurious.

Rings: beautiful, but not always straight away

Rings can finish a curated ear beautifully, but they're not always the best start for fresh cartilage piercings. Rings move more than straight bars, which can cause extra movement in a healing channel. That's why we usually start fresh cartilage piercings with a straight labret or barbell. A ring can often go in later, once the piercing has fully healed.

So: not a no to the ring. Just the right order.

Which materials work?

For a curated ear we look at beauty, but also at quality and comfort. We work with implant-grade titanium, niobium and solid 14K and 18K gold (most in 18K). For a fresh piercing titanium is best, but gold is possible too: the first bar is longer and is later replaced with a shorter one, so we usually use a titanium bar with a gold attachment. Whatever you choose, the material has to be suitable for long-term skin contact and its quality traceable.

Downsizing: small detail, big difference

Your first bar is often placed a little longer on purpose, to leave room for swelling. But that longer bar doesn't have to stay forever. Once the swelling has gone down, you may need a shorter one. Downsizing is an important step: a bar that's too long can snag, put pressure on the piercing and throw the placement off visually. In a curated ear that matters even more, because one crooked or too-long piece can affect the whole composition. Curious how changing jewellery works? How long does a complete curated ear take?

A big ear project can take months to more than a year. In our example plan, an ear with eight piercings is built up in phases over roughly 12 to 15 months. That timeline can shift if a piercing is still tender, red or irritated. The rule is simple: your body sets the pace, not the planning.

Who can get a curated ear?

From 16, you can come on your own; just bring a valid ID. Between 12 and 16, a parent or guardian comes with you and signs a consent form, and you both bring ID. Read more on our minimum age page.

Want your own curated ear?

You don't need to know exactly which piercings you want. A good ear project starts with looking: at your anatomy, your style, what's technically possible and how everything can come together later.
