Subtle, graceful and a little mysterious: fine line tattoos have been hugely popular for a while now. A tiny flower on your wrist, an elegant word along your collarbone or a minimalist line behind your ear. It looks effortless, but with fine lines every detail counts. In this post you'll learn what fine line is, how it looks a few years down the line and where it looks best.
What is a fine line tattoo?
A fine line tattoo is built from thin, precise lines. Often with little or no solid areas or shading, and usually in black or grey. The result is light and elegant, almost as if someone drew on your skin with a fine pen.
Popular fine line designs include:
- flowers, twigs and leaves;
- small symbols, like a moon, star or heart;
- elegant lettering, names or dates;
- minimalist line drawings of animals or faces.
Because the lines are so thin, fine line needs a steady hand and a lot of control. A line that goes slightly too deep or too shallow shows immediately in this style.
How fine line ages
This might be the most important part of this post. Your skin changes throughout your life, and a tattoo changes a little with it. With any tattoo, ink can soften and spread slightly over the years. With bold lines you notice that less. With very thin lines it can become visible over time: details can blur a bit and lines that sit very close together can drift towards each other.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't get fine line. It does mean a good design takes the future into account. A few things really help:
- Give the design enough space. Lots of detail on a tiny area looks amazing on day one, but a slightly bigger size stays beautiful for longer.
- Not too many lines too close together. Space between lines stops them merging later on.
- Protect your tattoo from the sun. UV light makes ink fade faster. While it heals, keep it out of the sun and tanning beds altogether; once healed, always use a high SPF.
- Good aftercare. A well-healed tattoo stays crisp for longer.
- Your body changes too. Big changes in weight can stretch the skin and affect how a tattoo looks. Read how weight loss and weight gain influence your tattoos.
An experienced artist will think along with you and tell you honestly if a design would work better a little bigger or simpler.
Best placements and sizes
Fine line looks good almost anywhere, but some spots are a bit more rewarding than others:
- Forearm and inner arm: flat skin, nicely visible and relatively stable.
- Collarbone and shoulder: ideal for elegant text or twigs that follow the shape of your body.
- Ankle and calf: great for small designs you can show off whenever you like.
- Behind the ear or on the neck: subtle and playful.
Areas where the skin moves a lot or gets lots of friction, like the inside of your fingers, hands and feet, are trickier. A tattoo can fade faster there. Read more in Finger tattoos. Not sure about a spot? Just ask your artist.

Aftercare for fine lines
With thin lines, good aftercare is extra important. A few general tips:
- follow the aftercare instructions you get from us; everything is also in our tattoo aftercare instructions (PDF);
- touch your tattoo as little as possible and wash it twice a day with a mild, fragrance-free soap, then pat it dry with a clean towel or tissue;
- if you like, apply a thin layer of Bepanthen Wound Cream or another suitable tattoo aftercare cream with clean hands (regular Bepanthen only once your tattoo is fully healed);
- no sun or tanning beds (not even with sunscreen), no swimming pools, hot tubs, natural water or saunas while it heals; that usually takes about 2 weeks;
- once it has healed, always use a high SPF in the sun.
With a good design, a steady hand and proper aftercare, your fine line tattoo will stay beautiful for a long time. See you at the studio!
