Eskimo Piercing (Vertical Labret) in Amsterdam: The Full Guide
Summary: An Eskimo piercing is a vertical labret that runs from the inside of your lower lip to just below your lower lip edge. At Piercings Works Amsterdam we check your anatomy first so it fits you perfectly.
So what is an Eskimo piercing?
Want something a little different from a classic labret? Meet the Eskimo piercing, also called the Labret Vertical or vertical labret. It goes vertically through your lower lip: one end sits on the inside of your lip, the other comes out just below your lower lip edge. The result? A subtle, cool detail that really shows when you smile or talk.
Is it right for you? Anatomy check first
Every lip is different, and that's totally fine. For an Eskimo piercing we look at the shape and thickness of your lower lip and how it sits against your teeth and gums. Not sure? Just walk in and one of our piercers will take a look with you. Honest advice, even if the answer is "maybe not".
Does it hurt?
Pain is personal, so we won't pin a number on it. Most people describe a quick, sharp pinch. Your lip may be a bit swollen and tender for a few days afterwards; that's a normal part of early healing.
Jewelry: titanium curved barbell
We pierce the Eskimo with a titanium curved barbell: a slightly curved bar that follows the natural curve of your lip. Titanium is lightweight and a great choice for fresh piercings. Once you're healed, you can switch up the ends to match your style.
What does an Eskimo piercing cost?
An Eskimo piercing (vertical labret) at our studio costs €50, including a standard titanium jewel and a one-week aftercare pack.
Aftercare: heal it right
- Wash your hands before touching your piercing, and otherwise leave it alone.
- Clean the outside with sterile saline solution.
- Rinse your mouth after eating with water or an alcohol-free mouthwash.
- Go easy on smoking, alcohol and very spicy food in the first period.
- Don't play with the jewelry, not with your tongue or teeth either.
Healing takes about 6 to 8 weeks. That's a guideline: everyone heals at their own pace. Notice signs of infection like swelling, pain, fever or red streaks around the piercing? Contact your doctor or dentist straight away (source: ADA).
Risks: watch your teeth and gums
With lip and oral piercings, the jewelry can rub against your teeth and gums. This can lead to tooth damage and gum recession (source: ADA). According to the APP, playing with oral jewelry is the most frequent cause of tooth and gum damage, so hands (and tongue) off! That's why good placement and well-fitting jewelry matter so much, and it's smart to have your dentist keep an eye on it at check-ups.
