What is the difference between an Ampallang and an Apadravya piercing? Read about pain, healing, jewellery, aftercare and risks.

Two special intimate piercings, two different placements. What is the difference between an Ampallang and an Apadravya? How painful are they, how long does healing take and what should you know before you choose one?

A piercing is never just a piece of jewellery. It is a conscious change to the body, sometimes visible to everyone and sometimes very personal.

The Ampallang and Apadravya are among the most special and technically challenging intimate piercings. Both go through the glans of the penis, but they differ in direction, anatomical positioning and look.

These are piercings where precision, experience and a good understanding of anatomy are essential.

At Piercings Works Amsterdam, we have worked with all kinds of body piercing since 1998. In that time we have learned that the most beautiful results start with something you can't see right away: knowledge, care and respect for the body.

In this article we explain what makes these two piercings special, how they are done, what to expect during the healing process and which risks matter.

What is an Ampallang piercing?

An Ampallang piercing is a horizontal piercing that goes through the glans of the penis.

The piercing channel runs from one side to the other. A straight barbell is used as jewellery: a small bar with a ball at each end.

Depending on the anatomy and the chosen technique, the piercing channel can run above the urethra or cross it.

The Ampallang has a striking, symmetrical look. The ends of the jewellery are visible on both sides of the glans.

Because the piercing goes through sensitive tissue with a rich blood supply, placing it requires exceptional precision.

Why do people choose an Ampallang?

The reasons differ.

For some people, the horizontal, symmetrical look is the main attraction. Others are interested in the possible effect on sexual sensation.

An intimate piercing can also have a personal meaning.

It can be a conscious choice to experience your own body in a different way, a form of self-expression or simply an aesthetic preference.

Whatever the motivation, the anatomy ultimately determines whether an Ampallang can be placed responsibly.

What is an Apadravya piercing?

An Apadravya piercing runs vertically through the glans of the penis.

The piercing channel goes from the underside to the top and usually crosses the urethra.

A straight barbell is used for this piercing as well.

The Apadravya has a characteristic vertical look and is often chosen for the combination of aesthetics and personal experience.

The shape of the glans, the position of the urethra and the amount of suitable tissue all play an important role in the placement.

What makes an Apadravya special?

The Apadravya requires very careful positioning.

Because the piercing channel usually crosses the urethra, the piercer has to assess precisely where the piercing can be placed responsibly.

The length of the jewellery also deserves special attention.

The barbell must leave enough room for the anatomical changes during an erection and for any swelling.

Jewellery that is too short can cause pressure, while jewellery that is too long can cause unnecessary movement and irritation.

That is why there is no standard size that suits everyone.

Ampallang vs. Apadravya: what is the difference?

The main difference is the direction of the piercing channel.

  • Ampallang: horizontally through the glans.
  • Apadravya: vertically through the glans.

Both piercings are done with a straight barbell and require an individual anatomical assessment.

Healing can take a long time with both piercings. Allow for months rather than weeks; for some people healing takes approximately a year or longer.

Which piercing suits you best depends not only on your personal preference, but above all on your anatomy.

How are an Ampallang and Apadravya done?

A professional placement doesn't start with the needle, but with a conversation and an anatomical assessment.

The piercer looks at the shape of the glans, the position of the urethra and the amount of available tissue.

They also take into account where the jewellery will sit and the changes that occur during an erection.

If the anatomy is suitable, the position is carefully determined.

Both piercings are done with a sterile piercing needle and fitted with a straight barbell.

Choosing the right material, thickness and length of the jewellery is essential here.

A good piercer knows not only how to do a piercing, but also when a piercing is better not done.

That distinction is especially important with complex intimate piercings.

Does an Ampallang or Apadravya piercing hurt?

This is probably one of the first questions people ask.

The answer is that both piercings can be quite intense.

The glans contains many nerve endings and has a rich blood supply. That is why having these piercings done can be experienced as particularly sensitive.

Still, the experience of pain differs greatly from person to person.

Some people mainly feel a brief, sharp sensation. Others find the swelling and tenderness after the piercing more challenging than the piercing itself.

The first few days can also be tender.

A certain amount of swelling, tenderness, bruising and bleeding can occur.

With Ampallang and Apadravya piercings, the bleeding in the first days can be more noticeable than with many other piercings.

Heavy or persistent bleeding, however, is a reason to seek medical help.

How long does healing take?

Healing an Ampallang or Apadravya takes patience.

Allow for months rather than weeks, and for some people approximately a year or longer. We can't promise a fixed timeframe.

The exact healing time differs per person and depends on several factors, including anatomy, general health, strain on the tissue and aftercare.

The first weeks are usually the most sensitive.

After that, swelling and tenderness usually decrease gradually.

Still, a piercing that looks calm is not automatically fully healed.

The piercing channel can already look recovered on the outside while the tissue on the inside is still fragile.

That is why it is important to stay careful after the first months too.

Unnecessary pressure, friction and changing the jewellery too early can disrupt the healing process.

Why does healing take so long?

With both piercings, the channel runs through a relatively large amount of tissue.

The body has to form a stable, healed layer of tissue along the entire piercing channel.

This process takes time.

In addition, daily movements, erections and sexual activity can affect the strain on the tissue.

A calm healing therefore requires not only good hygiene, but also patience.

Which jewellery is used?

A straight barbell is used for both an Ampallang and an Apadravya.

The quality of the material is particularly important.

For new piercings, high-quality, implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136) is often a suitable choice.

The finish of the jewellery must also be of high quality.

A smooth surface and well-finished connections help limit unnecessary irritation.

The right thickness and length also play an important role.

A bar that is too short can cause pressure when the tissue swells.

A bar that is too long can move unnecessarily, catch on things or cause irritation.

Because the penis changes in shape and size during an erection, the length of the barbell has to be adjusted to that.

Once the initial swelling has gone down, a professional check may be needed to assess whether the jewellery needs to be adjusted.

Don't change the jewellery yourself during healing.

Do Ampallang and Apadravya piercings affect sexual sensation?

There is a lot of curiosity about this topic.

Because of the presence and positioning of the jewellery, the experience of touch, pressure and friction can change.

Some people describe a different or more intense sensation, both for themselves and for their partner.

But sexual sensitivity is personal.

There is no guarantee that an Ampallang or Apadravya will increase sexual pleasure.

Jewellery can also cause discomfort or irritation during sexual activity.

That is why we think it is important to have realistic expectations.

An intimate piercing is a personal choice, not a promise of a particular sexual effect.

Sex during the healing process

During healing, it is important to be careful with sexual activity.

A new piercing is a wound that needs time to recover.

Friction, pressure and contact with bodily fluids can cause irritation and increase the risk of infection.

Avoid sexual activity as long as there is pain, bleeding or obvious irritation.

When the tissue has calmed down enough, activities can be carefully resumed, provided they don't cause pain or new irritation.

Keep the following points in mind:

  • Make sure you have good hygiene.
  • Avoid rough movements and direct pressure.
  • Use suitable barrier methods to limit contact with bodily fluids.
  • If needed, use a clean, water-based lubricant.
  • Stop immediately if an activity causes pain or bleeding.

Certain jewellery can damage condoms. So check carefully that a barrier method fits well and is not strained by the jewellery.

During healing, being careful matters more than speed.

How do you care for an Ampallang or Apadravya piercing?

Good aftercare supports the natural healing process.

At Piercings Works, we believe aftercare should above all be careful and simple.

1. Keep the piercing clean

If needed, use a sterile saline solution of 0.9% sodium chloride that is suitable for wound care.

Rinse gently and avoid over-cleaning.

2. Always wash your hands

Only touch the piercing when necessary, and wash your hands thoroughly first.

3. Don't twist the jewellery

Twisting or moving the barbell back and forth can damage the healing tissue.

4. Avoid harsh products

Don't use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or harsh disinfectants.

Random creams and ointments can also cause irritation.

5. Avoid unnecessary pressure

Wear comfortable clothing and avoid friction or movements that put strain on the jewellery.

6. Have the jewellery checked

When the swelling goes down, the length may need to be adjusted.

Have this assessed by an experienced piercer.

A piercing doesn't heal faster because you do more to it. The body mainly needs rest and time.

What risks do these piercings have?

As with any piercing, there are risks.

With an Ampallang or Apadravya, certain complications deserve extra attention, because the piercing goes through sensitive tissue with a rich blood supply.

Possible complications are:

  • Bleeding and bruising.
  • Prolonged swelling or irritation.
  • Infections.
  • Damage to surrounding tissue.
  • Problems with the urethra or urination.
  • Changes in sensitivity.
  • Scarring.
  • Discomfort during erections or sexual activity.

Not every complication is common, but it is important that you know these risks before you make a decision.

If you have a fever, increasing redness or swelling, pus, severe pain, persistent bleeding or problems urinating, a medical assessment is necessary.

An experienced piercer also recognises when a piercing is not anatomically responsible.

Sometimes the best professional advice is not to do a particular piercing.

Is every penis suitable for an Ampallang or Apadravya?

No.

Every anatomy is different.

The shape and size of the glans, the position of the urethra, the amount of available tissue and the presence of a foreskin can all affect the possibilities.

The space the jewellery needs during an erection must also be taken into account.

That is why it can't be guaranteed in advance that an Ampallang or Apadravya is possible for everyone.

A good piercer always first assesses whether the desired placement is anatomically responsible.

The safety of the body always comes before the wish to have a particular piercing.

The history of Ampallang and Apadravya piercings

Intimate piercings are not a modern invention.

Various forms of genital body adornment have existed for a long time in a wide range of cultures.

The Ampallang is often associated with traditional penis ornaments in parts of Southeast Asia, including Borneo.

The Apadravya is regularly linked to historical Indian traditions and texts on sexuality.

The precise origin and meaning of these names can't always be established unambiguously.

What we do know is that, throughout history, body adornment could mean much more than just aesthetics.

It could be connected to identity, social customs, personal symbolism and sexuality.

Today, people give it their own meaning.

For some, an intimate piercing is an aesthetic choice. For others, it stands for autonomy, self-expression or a special relationship with their own body.

Can you combine an Ampallang and Apadravya?

Yes, in some cases that is anatomically possible.

A combination of both piercings is also called a Magic Cross.

Here, a horizontal and a vertical piercing both go through the glans.

This is a particularly complex combination that requires extra attention to the anatomy, the positioning and the jewellery.

Not every anatomy is suitable for this.

The piercing channels and jewellery must also not strain each other in a way that causes problems.

Such a combination therefore requires a very careful professional assessment.

Can an Apadravya be done if you already have a Prince Albert?

In some cases, an existing Prince Albert can become part of an Apadravya.

Whether this is possible depends on the original placement, the healing and the anatomy.

An existing piercing doesn't automatically mean the additional placement is suitable.

Always have this assessed individually.

Frequently asked questions about Ampallang and Apadravya piercings

Can an Ampallang or Apadravya close up?

Yes.

Even a fully healed piercing can narrow or close after the jewellery is removed.

How quickly this happens differs per person.

Permanent scarring or a visible piercing channel may also remain.

Can I change the jewellery during healing?

Don't change the jewellery yourself during healing.

If an adjustment is necessary, have an experienced piercer do it.

Can an intimate piercing cause problems with urination?

That is possible, especially when the piercing channel crosses the urethra.

Some people notice changes in their urine stream.

If you have pain, obstruction or other problems urinating, a medical assessment is necessary.

Is an Ampallang more painful than an Apadravya?

That can't be said in general.

The experience of pain differs per person and is influenced by anatomy, sensitivity and individual circumstances.

Both piercings can be intense.

Are these piercings permanent?

A piercing can be worn for years, but removing the jewellery doesn't always mean the piercing channel disappears completely.

A visible scar or a permanent opening may remain.

From what age can I get an intimate piercing?

We only do intimate piercings from the age of 16, not even with a parent's consent.
