A heart and an anchor are two of the oldest and most recognisable tattoo motifs around. They're simple, fit any style and say a lot without a single word. Whether you're looking for your very first tattoo or a small addition to your collection, these classics never get old.

A heart and an anchor are two of the oldest and most recognisable tattoo motifs around. They're simple, fit any style and say a lot without a single word. Whether you're looking for your very first tattoo or a small addition to your collection, these classics never get old. In this post you'll learn what they often mean and how to choose your own version.

What does a heart tattoo mean?

The heart is the ultimate symbol of love. That can be love for a partner, your family or your friends, but also for yourself. For many people, a small heart is a reminder to take good care of themselves. Because it's so simple, you can take it in any direction.

Fun heart ideas:

  • A tiny outline heart on your wrist, ankle or behind your ear;
  • A fingerprint heart: a heart filled with the fingerprint of someone you love;
  • Two half hearts for you and your best friend;
  • A heart with flowers or a small anchor through it;
  • A heart in one continuous line, minimalist and elegant.

What does an anchor tattoo mean?

An anchor keeps a ship in place, even in a storm. That's why an anchor tattoo often stands for stability, support and hope. The anchor is one of the best-known sailor symbols and suits Amsterdam perfectly, a city that grew big through its harbour and the sea. Many people choose an anchor for someone who keeps them grounded, or as a sign that they stand strong.

Fun anchor ideas:

  • a small fine line anchor on your wrist or finger;
  • an anchor wrapped in rope or chain;
  • an anchor combined with a heart or a rose;
  • an anchor with a compass or swallow, for the full sailor look.

Which style suits it?

  • Fine line: thin and delicate. Perfect for a tiny heart or anchor.
  • Minimalist: just the outline. Simple, clean and timeless.
  • Black and grey: shading gives an anchor weight and depth.
  • Colour: a red heart really pops. Ask your artist which colours are possible.

Great placements

Hearts and anchors are small, so they fit almost anywhere: the inside of your wrist, your ankle, behind your ear, your collarbone or your forearm. A heart on your finger is popular, but finger tattoos fade faster. Read more in Finger tattoos before you decide.

Tips for your design

  • Make it personal. A small detail, like a fingerprint or a combination with another symbol, makes a classic completely yours.
  • Small is fine, but not too small. Very fine lines placed too close together can blur over the years. Your artist will advise you on the size.
  • Bring a good fingerprint. A clear print on paper or a sharp photo works best.

Aftercare for your tattoo

You'll get aftercare advice from us, and everything is in our tattoo aftercare instructions (PDF). In short:

  • healing usually takes about 2 weeks;
  • touch your tattoo as little as possible, wash it twice a day with a mild, fragrance-free soap and pat it dry;
  • if you like, apply a thin layer of Bepanthen Wound Cream or another suitable tattoo aftercare cream; regular Bepanthen only once your tattoo is fully healed;
  • no Sterilon or Betadine, no plasters or bandages and no tight or dirty clothing over it;
  • while it heals: no swimming pools, hot tubs, natural water, saunas or steam baths (showering is fine) and no sun or tanning beds, even with sunscreen; after that, always use a high SPF;
  • extreme redness, swelling, pus or severe pain? Contact your doctor straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Is a heart a good first tattoo?

Definitely. A small heart is done quickly, fits anywhere and is a great way to find out what getting tattooed feels like.

Can I get a small heart or anchor as a walk-in?

Often, yes, especially for small designs. Want to be sure of a spot? Book a tattoo appointment in advance.

How much does a heart or anchor tattoo cost?

That depends on size, detail and placement. You always get a personal quote. Read how the price of a tattoo is determined.
